Many natural and human-made nonlinear oscillators exhibit the ability to adjust their rhythms due to weak interaction: two lasers, being coupled, start to generate with a common frequency; cardiac pacemaker cells fire simultaneously; violinists in an orchestra play in unison. Such coordination of rhythms is a manifestation of a fundamental nonlinear phenomenon - synchronization. Discovered in 17th century by Christiaan Huygens, it was observed in physics, chemistry, biology and even social behavior, as well as found practical applications in engineering and medicine. The notion of synchronization has been recently extended to cover the adjustment of rhythms in chaotic systems, large ensembles of oscillating units, rotating objects, continuous media, etc. In spite of essential progress in theoretical and experimental studies, synchronization remains a challenging problem of nonlinear sciences. In this lecture we first introduce the notion of self-sustained oscillations and discuss different aspects of synchronization: synchronization by external force, mutual synchronization, effect of noise, synchronization of chaotic systems, synchronization in large ensembles with local or global coupling. We proceed with the discussion of methods for analysis of experimental systems and data. These methods allow detection and characterization of synchronization and determination of the direction of coupling between the systems. We illustrate the methods by the applications to analysis of cardiorespiratory interaction and analysis of brain activity.

Oscillations, synchronization and optimization

The heart beat is generated by the interaction between a surprising number of internal, and a variety of external rhythms. There are three important phenomena which are of particular interest. 1) Oscillations of biological variables appear to be essential for their optimal adjustment and therefore, for the effectivity of control. 2) Biological oscillators tend to synchronize. 3) The magnitude of biological variables in animals of different size, can be described statistically as so-called "allometric" functions of the body mass. Among other examples time periods of heart beat and the breath to breath period are longer in larger animals. We apply an EKG-based noninvasive technique for long-term recording for the analysis of the heart beat, the frequency spectrum of the heart rate, its synchronization with other rhythms, the circadian variations, including sleep and the effect of stress and rehabilitation. Since the human eye is especially sensitive to colors, we display the results in color-coded form. Supported by the FWF: SFB Optimierung und Kontrolle

Rhythms and Synchronisation in Cutaneous Bloodflow

Optical photoplethysmography and Laser-Doppler studies of blood volume and flow in the arterial system show heartbeat, respiration rhythms and manifold rhythms in the range of 0.15 Hz and below. The precise origin of these low-f variations is still under discussion. Indications are that episodal effects due to vasomotion and nervous excitation play a role leading to transient phenomena with various "quasi attractors". Under constant load (mental or physical) synchronisation with more stable attractors is observed. In a simplified picture this may be compared to "rhythms" of a car with automatic transmission under time-varying or constant load conditions.
